From Belgian developer Antoine Potten who gave us the properly good Ant Movie Catalog (program to manage a collection of movies) comes the free and open sources Ant Renamer, a Windows utility that will quickly rename batches of files or folders. Just pick the files you want to rename, select one of the many renaming rules, and let Ant Renamer do its job. It will be done before you know it.

The Ant Renamer installation file is a very lightweight 1MB, which means you will spend little time getting it off the web and onto your computer. You can install the application on just about any Windows edition, including XP, Vista and Windows 7. A straightforward setup wizard will guide you through the installation process. You will get to pick the installation directory and you will get to choose between a full installation (toolbar icon sets and language files included), compact installation, and custom installation. When you’re done and you run Ant Renamer for the fist time, you will be asked to choose one of the many languages the application supports.

The interface puts the emphasis on functionality and not on eye candy. There’s a large pane that lists the files you selected, and there are buttons for the main functions at the top. Select Files -> Add Files to choose the files that need to be renamed. From Actions pick one of the many renaming rules: change extension, string and multiple string replacement, move string, delete character, use date and time, and more. Once you’re done picking the renaming rule, just hit Go and the application will start renaming the files you selected. If you change your mind, you can stop and undo the renaming task.

Ant Renamer, as mentioned above, is free and open source. You don’t have to spend any money to use it, and you can get the source code if you want to. Do consider making a donation if you enjoy the functionality Ant Renamer has to offer and if you want to support its development.

There are three things you have to appreciate about this batch renaming tool: the ease of use, the powerful renaming functions, and the fact that it is free and open source. Ant Renamer greatly simplifies the task of renaming multiple files or folders.

Pros

Takes little time to download and install the application; can be installed on any Windows edition. Simple and user friendly interface. There are several renaming rules to choose from. You can stop and undo renaming tasks. The application is free and open source. Support for many languages is provided.

Cons

None that I could think of.
